20-watt tubes 24 inches long!

Wide color distribution (more reds and yellows) in these fluorescent tubes maximizes the growing environment for most types of plants.

The only seed-starting method many gardeners will use, Jiffy Pots revolutionized gardening and continue to be one of the most popular ways of growing from seed for transplant into the garden. The principle is simple: Jiffy Pots are constructed of lightweight, sturdy Canadian sphagnum moss, so as the roots develop, they eventually grow right through the Jiffy Pot wall and into the garden soil! It's been working like a charm for decades!

Jiffy Pots are great for annuals, perennials, and vegetables, and are especially effective for hard-to-transplant species. Because you plant the entire pot without disturbing the root system, many plants which normally suffer transplant shock make the transition without turning a leaf!

These 3-inch-high and -round pots are ideal for placement in Trays. For larger Jiffy Pots, 2 1/4 inch Square Jiffy Pots and 3 inch Square Jiffy Pots. For smaller pots try 2 1/4 inch Round Jiffy Pot. Set of 22.

How long should grow lights be kept on per day and how close to the plants should the light be kept?

For germination and seedling/plant growth, you want to simulate the natural day-night cycles, and as a general rule, grow lights should be on 8-12 hours per day and off at night. You can vary this timing, as some seeds such as tomato, pepper, petunia, impatiens, and others, benefit from 14-17 hours of light per day (and the remainder of the 24 hour period in darkness). The most common grow lights used are fluorescent; using cool white, warm white, and wide-spectrum fluorescent tubes. These lights work well for germination and for growing plants up to a transplantable size. Fluorescent lights should be kept close though, 3-6 inches above the soil or the growing plants, adjusting the height as the plants grow.
