The First Intergeneric Cross Between the American and Chinese Sweetshrubs!

Vigorous habit, glossy foliage, and long-lasting blooms!
x Sinocalycalycanthus raulstonii (synonym: Calycanthus ? raulstonii). Cultivar name: 'Hartlage Wine'.

This revolutionary Sweethshrub cultivar is the first successful intergeneric cross between the native Calycanthus floridus (Carolina allspice) and the Chinese counterpart, Sinocalycanthus chinensis. This phenomenal Raulston's Allspice is a JC Raulston Arboretum Selection™. It was created by Horticultural Science Student Richard Hartlage, working under the direction of J.C. Raulston, Ph.D. This breakthrough cultivar is so new and unprecedented that experts are still deciding whether it falls in the Genus Calycanthus or if it should be classified an x Sinocalycalycanthus.

This fascinating specimen features the same vigorous habit (growing 8 to 10 feet tall) and glossy foliage as its parents, but with a greatly improved bloom show! Growing up to 4 inches wide, these lovely maroon flowers dazzle in the mid-spring garden, lasting an exceptionally long time and reblooming on throughout the summer! These glossy, very open blooms are not quite as fragrant as their spicy parents, though they still emit a subtle scent from their alluring white centers. The deciduous leaves are a bright emerald green all summer, then take on a soft golden hue in the fall.

Ideally suited for woodland areas, 'Hartlage Wine' thrives in mottled shade, but can tolerate full sun as long as the soil is kept sufficiently moist. Pepper it liberally throughout your landscape: the gorgeous maroon blooms attract bees and butterflies, but thankfully deer ignore it. Zones 6 to 9.
