The foliage of this disciplined Japanese Maple is captivating enough to inspire a hundred Koans or Haikus.
Also known as 'Aka shigitatsu sawa'--"Aka" and "Beni" are both words for the red hue of the plant. Either way you cut it, this Japanese Maple is drenched in brilliant red color! Renowned for fine red foliage in the spring, 'Beni Shigitatsu Sawa' begins the year by unfurling tiny leaves of brilliant crimson. This color holds well during spring, then turns a pink-tinted green for summer, and finally assumes a muted shade of orange-red in autumn. In Ancient Japanese, the name means "red snipes over a winter marsh!"

'Shigitatsu Sawa' Maples are well-known for their pale veins, adding a ghostly effect to the foliage. 'Beni' makes this ghostly, variegated foliage all the more interesting with the addition of red hues in the spring and fall. The interplay of white, green, and crimson across these deeply-lobed leaves is truly captivating.

Create a second season of Japanese Maple interest in your garden with this fine spring standout. This small, spreading tree has an upright habit and will reach only 8 to 12 feet tall at maturity, and about the same width.

It is a superb container choice, and makes a splendid specimen, with its slightly spreading habit adding horizontal architecture to the landscape. Find a place to show off its silhouette, and even the bare branches in winter make an interesting statement.

A fairly cold-tolerant variety, 'Beni Shigitatsu Sawa' is hardy all the way through zone 5. It appreciates shelter from the hottest afternoon sun in all but very northern climates. Give it morning sun, average water, and soil on the acidic side, and it will reward you with years of fine crimson foliage. Find a place of honor for this outstanding Japanese Maple! Zones 5-9.
