Callicarpa Early Amethyst
The long, berry-laden branches are great for cutting!
Purple Beautyberry quickly grows 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, with masses of slender stems that bear small, attractive pink blooms in spring. The flowers are followed by round, shiny, almost unbelievably showy fruit, attracting birds by the drove to your garden! Most Beautyberries wait until September to really get the fruit show underway, but Early Amethyst will have you in color by mid- to late summer! And the berry stems are also splendid in indoor arrangements, lasting for weeks without surrendering one iota of color or shape!
If you like to watch birds in the sunny garden, Early Amethyst is a much more economical and attractive source of food than store-bought seeds! Songbirds flock to it all autumn, and as the leaves fall from the shrub, the purple fruit simply becomes showier than ever. You can't go wrong with this garden favorite!
Plant Early Amethyst in rich, well-drained soil receiving full sun in the north or dappled shade in the south. It makes a nice hedge, and can be sheared down nearly to the ground in late winter to encourage new blooms in spring (and to keep its compact size). Very easy to grow, and super showy! Zones 5-8.
