One of the truest blues in the garden
There are few true blues in the gardening world, but Caryopteris (Blue spirea, Blue-mist, or Bluebeard) comes close! Either a shrub or a woody perennial, Caryopteris forms a low, neat mound that's drought tolerant, pest resistant, and virtually maintenance free. Caryopteris blooms -- typically shades of blue or purple -- appear by the hundred in late summer, clustered in panicles above the foliage and drawing in butterflies and beneficial insects. The foliage, which is blue-green or silvery-gray to yellow or variegated, is also quite lovely!
