Chasmanthium River Mist
Great Winter Interest
The bamboo-like foliage is bright green and white striped, each stem individually patterned. Reaching 2 to 2½ feet high and not quite as wide, 'River Mist' forms a multi-directional, lively upright clump that catches the eye in the sunny to partly shaded garden. Best in moist, well-drained soil, it is quite trouble-free from a young age, even demonstrating excellent resistance to deer.
In midsummer, arching flower stems arise bearing pink-tinged silvery seedheads that may remind you of oats. Dangling in loose clusters from atop the plant, they stand out nicely against the variegated foliage. The pink hues have passed by late summer, but the seedheads remain well into winter, attracting songbirds in autumn and slowly drying into a brittle form that rustles with the breeze. Superb for fresh and dried arrangements, the seedheads are a striking and very long-lasting addition to this deciduous perennial.
Cut back the foliage in late winter or earliest spring to encourage new growth. Long-lived and very low maintenance, 'River Mist' is a stellar addition to the garden. Zones 5-8.
