Cosmos Campus Yellow
This native is grown as an annual, but you may find it reappearing for a season or two!
The flowers are single and daisy-shaped, with a slight upward cupping of the petals. They arise on long, slender stems, and are a magnet for every butterfly in the neighborhood to come pay its respects. Best in hot sunny settings, this plant thrives especially well in very well-drained soil that's on the sandy side and not too heavily fertilized. Once it's up and growing, it tolerates heat and drought beautifully, and is untroubled by most pests and diseases. What could be easier or more beautiful?
Campus Yellow reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and about 2 feet wide, with an airy yet well-branched habit that supports masses and masses of blooms over its long season. Very easy to start from seed, it can be begun indoors in late winter or direct-sown in spring when the soil has warmed. To start it indoors, give it a temperature of about 75 degrees F and just pop a seed into each sponge of the Bio Dome. The seeds will sprout in 7 to 10 days, and the seedlings can be transplanted when they have at least 2 sets of true leaves. Expect the first flowers just 60 to 90 days from sowing! Pkt is 20 seeds.
