Grow your own saffron
I've had herbs in the garden for years, but I hadn't tried to grow saffron crocus until I moved from Ohio to South Carolina. Now I live in Zone 7-8, and my town gets very little summer rain most years. From 10 bulbs I get enough home-grown saffron for my bouillabaise, which is our traditional Christmas eve supper. Unfortunately, I've had to re-plant twice now. It could be from lack of rain, or maybe the squirrels found some way to get them out of the wire basket. (I assume squirrels love them as much as other crocuses).
