Currant Cherry Red
Currants are very cold hardy!
Earlier and much more abundant than others, this splendid currant was developed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, and has become the favorite. Big tart-sweet berries arise on vigorous multi-stemmed shrubs in midsummer.
Expect 10 pounds of fruit every year on this mildew-resistant plant, which reaches 4 to 6 feet high and 2 to 4 feet wide. The plants may be pruned as hedges, espaliered, or grown in containers. Insect-pollinated, currants do best in moist, humus-rich soil. Currants are very cold hardy. They do their best where temperatures seldom rise above 85°F or fall below -30°F. Zones 3-8.
