Every garden deserves a few standout blooms, and this pair of Dahlias would like to fill that role in your landscape! Two varieties from the notable Illusion series, Ferncliff and Optic look great together or separately, each double-flowered and boasting two distinct color patterns. Find some sunny, well-drained, enriched soil and prepare to be wowed by these charmers!

Ferncliff can only be described as a Dahlia and a half. This massive plant thinks nothing of shooting up 5 feet or more in the air, setting buds and blooms along the way! The flowers are in the style known as Informal Decorative, with very uniform, rounded, pointed petals of white tipped in lavender. Fully 8 inches wide, these blooms are going to need some support to hold their heads up! What a wonderful problem to have!

And then there's almost a mirror reversal of Ferncliff: dark, smoky-red Optic! These flowers are double as well, though the plant is shorter at about 3½ feet (put it right in front of Ferncliff in the garden -- Ferncliff can lean on it for support!). Measuring 6 to 8 inches across, these blooms are a dark royal purple, almost charcoal in places, with undercurrents of white. Very showy!

Dahlia blooms reliably from midsummer through fall from a spring planting. Best in the sunny garden, it prefers rich, well-drained soil high in organic matter, plenty of water, and staking to support its bounty of blooms. If you want bigger blooms, disbud a few branches and remove others altogether, so that the plant concentrates all its energy on making a few gigantic blooms rather than more smaller ones. Deadhead the flowers promptly to encourage new buds to arise even faster. North of zone 8, dig up the tubers in late fall and store in vermiculite or sawdust in a frost-free area. Then replant them in spring for another glorious bloom season!
