Conspicuous anthers complete the display!

The warm tones come together to create a composition to rival any sunset!
Part of the Maid in the Shade® series, 'Darlin's Dream' adds a cherubic beauty to the garden that no other flowering shrub can rival! When the bloomshow starts in early spring, this Azalea takes on a dreamy look, with upright trusses of white blooms dabbed with yellow and tinged with lavender, for a look like clouds being painted gold and purple by the setting sun.

The blooms are funnel-shaped and sweetly fragrant, inviting you to revel with them! The golden spot at the top of each bloom's throat creates a bright, warm note in the garden, complementing the handsome light green foliage. Long filaments stretch from the flower's center like whimsical whiskers.

Azalea is now recognized as a sub-type of Rhododendron with some fine differences in the blooms-Azaleas tend to have 5 long stamens (rather than 10 shorter stamens), tend to have fine hairs on their leaves (rather than a "scaly" surface), tend to be deciduous (rather than evergreen), and tend to have funnel-shaped blooms (rather than bell-shaped ones). They are lovely for foundation plantings, naturalizing in drifts in open woodland settings and mass plantings throughout the landscape for long-lasting interest.

Azalea like the same conditions as other Rhododendrons, preferring acidic soil (pH 4.5-6.5) with a high percentage of organic material. These plants are shallow rooted and prefer consistently moist conditions, so we recommend adding a layer of coarse mulch around the roots and water frequently, especially in summer. Azalea are a forest understory plant, so they prefer sheltered conditions with some protection from drying winds and scorching afternoon sun. They tolerate more sun in the cooler northern zones and less in the hot southern zones. When placed in the right spot Azalea are quite low maintenance, quickly becoming established and requiring little attention afterwards.

'Darlin's Dream' is one of the larger and more impressive Azalea cultivars, growing up to 12 feet high and 8 feet wide and setting its cloud-like blooms in prolific trusses. This cross between Rhododendron canescens and R. alabamense is a perfect marriage of subtle colors and in-your-face bloom power!
