Daylily Siloam Peony Display

These flowers are fully 6 inches wide and nearly as "tall," with ruffled blooms combining soft shades of red, rose, pink, peach, and gold. The highlighted, shimmery overlay they boast is called "diamond dusting," and you can really see why it's such a prized feature. Siloam Peony Display is simply brighter and fuller than most other Daylilies, hands down!

The blooms begin in midsummer and put on a very heavy show for many weeks, then repeat into early autumn. And unlike traditional Daylilies that, true to their name, just bloom for a day, Siloam Peony Display is one of those lucky varieties that gets to jump and gun and open the night before its day of glory! With this in mind, you might consider planting it near the patio or other entertainment area in the garden, so that guests can enjoy its newly-opened blooms!

Just 18 inches tall, Siloam Peony Display is considered quite compact by Daylily standards, but it's wonderfully vigorous. It was bred by the late, great Pauline Henry, whom we have to thank for developing Daylilies with "eyezones" -- that band of contrasting color at the base of the petals on some varieties, just above the throat. Truth is, Siloam Peony Display has a lovely rosy-pink eyezone, but who can find it under all those petals?!

If you're new to Daylilies, welcome to the easiest perennial you'll ever grow! They love sun but tolerate a bit of shade, and they need well-draining soil. Other than that, all bets are off -- these powerhouses thrive despite heat, humidity, drought, cold, poor soil, and just about anything else. Pamper them the first season to get their root system established: plenty of water, rich soil, all the nice little touches -- and then let them go. The only thing you'll have to do is divide them every once in a while as they spread. (After a few years, they'll begin to lose bloom strength if they aren't divided.) Dividing them is as easy as a whack of the shovel, so that's no problem. Try Daylilies among your Daffodils -- they hide the dying foliage of the Daffodils and follow them in bloom, keeping the garden colorful for two seasons instead of just one. They are also nice friends to Bearded Iris, among many, many others.
