Overwinter Indoors as a Houseplant!

A Magnificent, Easy-to-Grow Plant
Pineapples are drought tolerant and easy to grow in containers on the patio. Although they are not very cold tolerant, they can be overwintered indoors as a houseplant. The plants will fruit in a container and create a desirable tropical effect. The pineapple makes a distinctive houseplant with a central rosette and long narrow leaves bearing sawtooth edges. The fruit is produced on a sturdy stalk at the center of the plant.

Every landscape deserves a pineapple plant, for this perennial is as lovely as it is useful. Forming a lovely rosette of long, stiff leaves 2½ to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, it is a magnificent container plant for the patio and winter plant for the home. The leaves are a deep blue-green and very symmetrical on this fruiting plant, remaining fresh year-round. From the center of the plant arise the flowers, with up to 200 light-purple to deep-red blooms held in a tall whorl. Eventually the flowers set berries, which join together to produce the pineapple fruit! It's fascinating to watch and eye-catching even from across the garden!

The fruit of this pineapple is white-fleshed, with no woodiness in the central core. It has a very high sugars-to-acids ratio, making it super-sweet and delicious. You haven't really tasted pineapple until you've picked your own straight from the patio!

Although it's quite drought tolerant, Elite Gold Pineapple is happiest in very well-drained, continuously moist soil and plenty of sunshine. Bring it indoors before first frost and set it in a warm, bright room for winter. Elite Gold needs full sun and temperatures above 68 degrees F. So easy to care for, so beautiful, and so delicious!
