Stable Lemon-and-Lime Variegated Foliage

This Ornamental Groundcover is Also a Valuable Herb
'Fiesta' is a cheerful evergreen groundcover, with lemon and lime-colored variegated leaves growing in a repeating cross pattern. The attractive foliage comes on with a rosy blush and then matures to its stable yellow-and-green variegated pattern. Reddish-brown woody stems spread from the plant's crown and put on these gorgeous leaves at regular ½- to 1-inch intervals. In the summer this groundcover transforms into a flower, with rose-shaped bright yellow blooms topping off the display. The blooms are 5-petaled and provide their cheerful color through the height of the season.

St. John's Wort (Hypericum) has long been a revered herb, known for its properties as a liniment, mood uplifter, and natural dye. Not only does the body of the plant provide miraculous relief to the body and mind, but the flowers are also a wondrous dye: when the yellow flowers are crushed they release a red-colored dye so bright it seems fluorescent! For these reasons, Hypericum has been a staple in gardens for generations, starting in its native Ireland and rising to popularity the world over. And the fabled power of this herb has recently been confirmed by modern science: it has become well-known as a treatment for depression, and is being trialed in treatments for AIDS. With so much good stuff hiding inside of this plant, it seems a shame to only use it ornamentally! You might want to double up on 'Fiesta,' putting some out to spread and some in the herb garden, to harvest.

At full size, this plant will grow 8 to 12 inches tall and 24 inches wide, and from there it will spread by underground runners, filling in open space as much as you let it. The low, slowly-spreading habit makes it an excellent groundcover or small hedge, and it also works well filling out mixed containers or spilling over hanging baskets. 'Fiesta' has smaller leaves, a more compact form, and a less-invasive habit than traditional St. John's Wort, making it ideal for proudly displaying in a patio garden.

'Fiesta' grows best in drier soil (drainage is important) in full sun. It tolerates shade well, but the colors won't come on as vibrant. 'Fiesta' is evergreen and drought tolerant once established. Zones 5 to 9.
