One of the finest native flowering vines, Flava is a delight for any vertical setting. It grows quickly, flowers heavily, attracts hummingbirds, and needs almost no attention from you. What could be nicer?

The flowers are borne in big clusters, beginning with the first breath of summer weather and continuing until frost. They open a nice warm shade of apricot orange, maturing through stages of gold to pure, bright yellow. The trumpet shape invites hummingbirds to sip nectar from their depths, and you may find little living jewels visiting your Flava vine all summer long!

Flava is an American classic, eager to establish and happy to naturalize in a congenial setting. However, this does not mean that it is invasive -- on the contrary, this vining perennial is fast-growing and very heavy-blooming, but won't take over unless you want it to. Expect it to reach anywhere from 10 to 30 feet long in a single season (it blooms the first year, though not as heavily as in subsequent seasons, when its root system is better established), and to spread about 5 to 8 feet wide. Cut it to the ground in late winter to encourage the blooms to begin lower on the vine; it blooms on new growth, so if you leave it unpruned, you may get flowers only on the tips of the stems.

Tolerant of heat, humidity, drought, poor soil, and other environmental stresses, Flava will also thrive in light shade, but the flowering may not be as heavy. It can also be grown as a groundcover, trailing along a sunny patch of open soil. This versatile and super-easy perennial is generally uneaten by deer and rabbits, who look elsewhere for their meals. In other words, beyond an annual pruning, Flava needs no maintenance to keep growing and blooming its very best for you! Highly recommended. Zones 4-9.
