Stunning Starbursts of Maroon and White!
This easy evergreen will be a favorite in any setting, its clusters of cosmic blooms inciting awestruck stares in all onlookers. The blooms begin as high-centered white buds, delightfully many-pointed, then burst into bloom. Maroon and white petals greet the sun and send long white stamens swirling forth.
This shrub reaches 4½ feet tall and 3½ feet wide at maturity. Make sure you give this free spirit enough room to reach its full potential. A superb foundation planting in partial shade, they are also a splendid addition to bed or border, making a nice backdrop to spring-flowering bulbs and mid- to late-summer blooming perennials.
Mountain Laurel does well in light shade and cool, moist soil that is well-drained and aerated. It also prefers acidic soil with plenty of peat, fertilized occasionally with Rhododendron fertilizers.In the wild it can be found clinging to slopes, and is perfectly at home in the woodland garden. Plant in a wide, shallow hole, with the root ball almost above ground level, then hill up the base with a rich, heavy mulch. Zones 4-7.
