Coppery Leaves turn Golden over Time

This Ornamental Groundcover is Also a Valuable Herb
This miraculous little plant is full of surprises! Golden Rule™ looks like a new plant every time you look at it, with the leaves starting out a deep coppery orange, then maturing to a stunning gold and finally to a bright chartreuse. And then the flowers arrive! In the summer this groundcover transforms into a flower, with rose-shaped bright yellow blooms topping off the display. The blooms are 5-petaled and provide their cheerful color through the height of the season.

St. John's Wort (Hypericum) has long been a revered herb, known for its properties as a liniment, mood uplifter, and natural dye. Not only does the body of the plant provide miraculous relief to the body and mind, but the flowers are also a wondrous dye: when the yellow flowers are crushed they release a red-colored dye so bright it seems fluorescent! For these reasons, Hypericum has been a staple in gardens for generations, starting in its native Ireland and rising to popularity the world over. And the fabled power of this herb has recently been confirmed by modern science: it has become well-known as a treatment for depression, and is being trialed in treatments for AIDS. With so much good stuff hiding inside of this plant, it seems a shame to only use it ornamentally! You might want to double up on Golden Rule™, putting some out to spread and some in the herb garden, to harvest.

At full size, this plant will grow 12 to 18 inches tall and about 24 inches wide, and from there it will spread by underground runners, filling in open space as much as you let it. The low, slowly-spreading habit makes it an excellent groundcover or small hedge. While traditional St. John's Wort can get out of hand, the non-invasive habit of this pious variety makes it well-suited to growing among other plants in a border or mixed container.

Because of the beautiful light colors, Golden Rule™ prefers more shade than other Hypericum, but tolerates full sun in cooler climates. Golden Rule™ grows best in drier soil (drainage is important) and becomes drought tolerant once established. The evergreen leaves are unpalatable to deer, and the yellow flowers attract butterflies!
