Heucherella 'Yellowstone Falls'
So easy to grow, with white blooms in spring and new foliage of gold and red!
Spring is definitely the season of glory for this shade-loving perennial, though it remains lovely through summer and autumn as well. But in spring, the new leaves unfurl a rich amber-apricot shade of golden, each dusted with scarlet at the center. As they grow they acquire chartreuse tones, and the combination of old and new foliage in late spring and early summer is breathtaking!
Spring also brings the arrival of slender 10-inch stems rising straight above the 6-inch-high foliage, bearing small white blooms in a long string like flags on a pole. These blooms are not conventionally showy, but they do attract butterflies and call attention to the foliage in the shade. They remain for several weeks, adding another dimension to the display of this fine perennial.
'Yellowstone Falls' is a selection of the native plant, and as such it's very resistant to pests and diseases. Vigorous and super-adaptable, it grows readily in just about any light except full sun. Let it sprawl along the garden floor as groundcover, meander over a low wall or other support in a terraced garden, or spill from the sides of planters, windowboxes, and hanging baskets!
The leaves are large and deeply lobed, with a puffy look that comes from slightly incurled edges. The red tones really jump out from the shade border or woodland garden, adding texture to the planting as well as unusual color. And even the hottest August days won't "green them out"!
Expect 'Yellowstone Falls' to trail up to 3 feet long. This is a showpiece of a plant, worthy of your best tall container or most prominent hanging basket. And the fact that it loves shade just gilds the lily -- how difficult is it to site all those baskets in full sun?! This Heucherella is perfect for the patio, porch, deck, and other people-centered location, where its beauty will be admired all season long, for many years to come. Make it part of your landscape this season! Zones 4-9.
