Boasts handsome bronzy-reddish fall foliage.
Plant Patent #20,020. Cultivar name: 'Robert'

The Let's Dance™ series of very compact, reblooming Hydrangeas has done more to bring this summer-flowering shrub to northern and cold-climate gardens than any before it! Moonlight is a free-flowering, absolutely gorgeous mophead with petals that shade from pink or blue (depending on soil pH) at the edges to a halo of creamy white at the base. Its huge bloomheads are held upright on straight stems, never drooping. And it flowers twice a year, so even if a late frost nips back the first buds, you're assured of one full season of color!

These blooms appear in huge globe-shaped trusses, the petals overlapping one another to create an even more full, lush look. Unlike most Hydrangea, which offer solid-colored petals, these are "haloed" at the base, creating a lovely two-tone look that is most beautiful. Expect the first flush of blooms in early summer, the second at summer's end.

And the flowers are all the more impressive because they appear on such compact shrubs! Let's Dance™ Moonlight is only 2 to 3 feet high and wide -- half the size of traditional Hydrangeas -- yet it is well-branched and covered with large, bright green leaves with showy serrated edges. Even out of bloom it is attractive, but you won't have to worry about that too much, not with these two seasons of glorious color!

Compact Hydrangeas are all the rage in Europe, bursting from windowboxes and terracotta pots everywhere you look. It's about time they made it across the ocean and into today's smaller-sized American gardens! Even if your only growing space is a city balcony, you can transform it into a floral paradise with a few pots of Moonlight and its cousin Starlight.

Like all Hydrangeas, Moonlight thrives in full sun in the north, partial shade farther south and west. It likes continuously moist soil, though it does need good drainage, and it stands up nicely to heat and humidity. This is not a plant to let dry out completely, however--it likes plenty of water!

Place Moonlight in the front of the shrub border, the foundation, along the driveway, and even as a low hedge to divide various areas of the garden. In autumn, its large, handsome leaves turn pleasing shades of bronze and red, adding another season of glory to the garden! Long-lived and low maintenance, it is a pleasure. Zones 5-9.
