Lobelia Delft Blue
Pure azure-blue blooms, very bright, are a welcome sight in the late-season garden.
The flowers appear on long, graceful stems from midsummer through early fall. They are magnets for butterflies and bees, particularly when grown in full sun (although partial shade, especially in hot and long-summer climates, is also fine). When not in bloom, Delft Blue is just 6 to 8 inches high, but the flowers add another 10 to 12 inches of height. Yet it will not spread more than a foot wide, making it ideal for large containers. Well-branched and dense, Delft Blue thrives in just about any moisture level, ranging from the slightly dry to the quite wet. Give it a full year to "find its feet" in your garden, then let it adapt to the natural conditions of your landscape. You'll find it will thrive easily!
Perfect for cutflower lovers, Delft Blue makes a good companion to bright yellow blooms from Rudbeckia to Gaillardia. It is long-lasting and lovely in the vase, offering much-needed bright color, especially in late summer and early fall, when the perennial cutting garden can be a bit threadbare. Be sure to add this unusual Lobelia to your garden this season -- it will repay you richly! Zones 5-9. Packet is 25 seeds.
