It's a breakthrough in Elephant Ears! Maui Gold is the first-ever "clumping" gold-leafed variety, meaning that it stays neat and contained even in semi-tropical and tropical climates. More important, it's absolutely gorgeous, with bright chartreuse leaves very thinly edged in dark purple and boasting a big purple spot where the leaf meets the stem! You won't find a more beautiful or easier to grow accent for sun to part shade, and this plant is so compact you can put it in a large container if you like!
The new foliage unfurls bright gold with a purple rim, huge and absolutely lovely. It quickly matures to chartreuse and may become bright lime-green in summer, all the while keeping its exquisite texture and shape. The habit of Maui Gold is vase-shaped, so it looks terrific as a specimen, in a flowerpot or tub, and in the garden. None of those sprawling, rangy Elephant Ears here -- just a symmetrical, perfectly gorgeous plant!
Maui Gold reaches about 4 feet high and maybe 3 feet wide, with dense growth (lots of big ears!). The stems are white to cream, adding to the ornamental appeal of this foliage plant. Grow it anywhere -- it's easy to stash in the garage or other frost-free location if you live north of its zone 7 hardiness range.
This is the latest in the Royal Hawaiian® series developed by University of Hawaii professor John Cho. These Elephant Ears were originally part of a series bred for leafspot resistance, so you can imagine how garden-tough they are! Give the plant ample water, well-drained soil, and either full sun or light shade, and let Maui Gold do the rest! You'll love the bright colors and bold, oversized foliage -- they complement most other plants in the garden perfectly, and are showy enough to stand on their own, too. Consider placing a pair of container Maui Golds at the bottom of the porch steps to welcome guests to your home, or a line of these plants in the front of the foundation, their giant leaves arching out into the garden path! They make a great backdrop for flowering annuals and perennials in beds and borders, too.
Have fun growing and admiring your Maui Gold Elephant Ear! Zones 7-11, or anywhere with frost-free winter protection.
