Nanjing Gold Paperbush
Perfumes the Entire Garden!
Paperbush is seldom seen in American gardens, despite its intense fragrance and unusual late winter to early spring blooms.
'Nanjing Gold' is the star of the winter garden, with a well-branched but very open habit setting masses of large, ultra-fragrant blooms in the heart of winter. To say that this shrub perfumes the garden is an understatement; its aroma wafts down the street, brightening the shortest days of the year with sweet, musky scent.
The flowers begin in midwinter and often continue into earliest spring, appearing on smooth, bare branches, opening bright gold and gradually maturing to creamy yellow over their weeks-long season.
From spring through fall, long olive-green foliage decorates the 8-foot-tall, 6-foot-wide shrub. Consider wending a Clematis through the widely spaced branches of 'Nanjing Gold' for another season of color. Best in acidic soil, it needs consistent moisture during dry spells if grown in full sun (recommended for heaviest flowering). Magnificent! Zones 8-10.
