65 days. Bright red from the base to the lower leaves, Red Baron is one scallion that might qualify as an edible ornamental in the border or formal garden! Impervious to changes in weather or stresses in growing conditions, it keeps its bright colors -- the upper leaves are rich green -- throughout the growth period. Harvest the 12- to 15-inch stalks when the bulb begins to swell. The 1/4- to 3/4-inch-diameter shafts are tender and pungent.
Start seed indoors in late winter to early spring for spring or summer harvest. Space seedlings 2 to 3 inches apart in the garden. If you want crisp, tender green onions, harvest the bulbs just after the swelling begins. Pkt is about 300 seeds.
