Ostbo Red Kalmia latifolia
Half the Size of Most Others!
'Ostbo Red' blooms in late spring in most climates, but long before the flowers open, the buds make quite a show of their own. They are a rich crimson-red and very profuse, standing out splendidly against dark green foliage. When they open, the petal interiors are soft pink, so the combination of two colors is even more striking!
A native American shrub, Mountain Laurel fares best in partial shade in all but the most northern climates. It needs good drainage, and takes a season or two to find its feet and begin flowering. Once it starts, it never looks back! And the evergreen foliage makes it useful as a hedge or a foundation subject.
Native vigor keeps most diseases and pests at bay, and once established in your yard, 'Ostbo Red' stands up to drought very effectively. Such an attractive, compact, free-blooming shrub! Zones 4-9.
