Birds love the seeds, and the plumes make excellent fresh or dried indoor arrangements.

Densely packed, slender olive-green foliage topped with airy tassels turn from green to silver and finally to gold over a long season.
One of the most pleasing and well-behaved of native Switchgrasses, 'Northwind' offers densely packed, slender olive-green foliage topped with airy tassels that turn from green to silver and finally to gold over a long season. It is useful as a hedge, perimeter planting, screen, border background, or even specimen, its foliage turning tan for winter.

Very easy to grow, this selection of the native species begins its flower show in early fall with feathery blooms of pale green, turning silver and finally gold by mid-winter. Birds love the seeds, and the plumes make excellent fresh or dried indoor arrangements.

Vigorous but never invasive, 'Northwind' is very drought tolerant once established, and untroubled by pests or diseases. It stands about 5 feet high and 2 to 3 feet wide, just the right size for a natural hedge, windbreak, or driveway plant. Very low maintenance, it repays a little pampering the first season with years of carefree beauty. For its adaptability to many conditions, resistance to pests and diseases, its low level of maintenance, and its multi-season appeal, 'Northwind' was named Perennial Plant of the Year for 2014 by the Perennial Plant Association! Zones 4-11.
