Petunia Surfinia® Purple Picotee PPAF
Expect up to 8 feet of flower-filled growth in a single season -- you can hang it from a second-story balcony for a "living pillar" of solid blooms!
If you like Petunia Wave® -- and who doesn't?! -- you will LOVE Surfinia®! More vigorous, longer-lasting, and even more floriferous than Wave®, it keeps going strong through mid- and late season, putting on a terrific show right up until hard frost. And because of its wild South American ancestors, it stands up more effectively to heat, humidity, and rain. You simply cannot do better for nonstop color from early spring through late fall.
These blooms are a bold dark rosy-pink with an irregular white edge that really stands out magnificently. They arise very close together on strong, vigorous branches, and new flowers open so quickly that you don't have to bother deadheading the old ones; they get covered up until they drop off! The flower power of this spreading Petunia is simply amazing -- unless you stop watering and feeding it, chances are you won't find it out of bloom for 7 months or more!
Unlike some spreading Petunias, Surfinia® does not just set new blooms at the end of the stem. Buds open continuously from the center and all along the stems, so there are no "flattopped" or empty-centered plants as the season progresses. In fact, the flowers cluster so profusely that despite being a trailing Petunia, Surfinia® achieves anywhere from 6 to 12 inches in height. Expect it to spread up to 8 feet in a single season in full sun to light shade, depending on the length of your growing season. (Shorter seasons will still see about 5 feet or more of growth!)
Surfinia® is grown from cuttings, never from seed, and we believe this is part of the reason for its greater vigor and staying power. If you set a Surfinia® side-by-side with a Wave®, you will notice that the Surfinia's® stems are thicker and its foliage a bit larger and more substantial. Its ancestry is different: Surfinias® were developed by Suntory, a Japanese beverage company that crossed wild South American species Petunias with cultivated varieties from seed for 8 years, until they developed the amazing Surfinia®. At this time, none of the new spreading Petunias existed, and Surfinia® was such an incredible breakthrough that it was released on the market at once, before the seed had been developed. Of course, it took off like wildfire, and the rush of new spreading varieties from seed, including Wave®, followed. But the scientists at Suntory discovered an interesting thing: Surfinia® from seed wasn't as vigorous or floriferous as Surfinia® from cuttings, and so they never marketed the seed. You will only find Surfinia® sold as plants. It remains the king of Petunias in Europe, commanding 85% of the market. And now it's ready to conquer America!
If you like Purple Picotee, you'll love all the other Surfinia® colors: blue veined, pastel pink, and Wild Plum. Whichever colors and combinations you choose, DO try at least one basket or windowbox of Surfinias® this season. You will be amazed with the results! Use 3 plants per 10-inch basket or planter, or set them in the garden 3 feet apart. Use a slow-release fertilizer at planting time, and feed every time you water for great bloom strength.
