Pieris Passion Frost
Keeps its variegation right through summer heat.
The flowers are most remarkable, deep purple-influenced rose rather than the white or cream of most other Japanese Pieris. They hang in 6-inch clusters all over this very well-branched shrub, demanding attention in mid- to late spring.
As lovely as the blooms are, it's difficult to miss them when they pass and the variegation of the long, pointed leaves really stands out. Boasting a thin white edge and central stripe, the dark green foliage is lush and eye-catching. You can rely on this evergreen to keep its good looks season in, season out.
Passion Frost reaches 4 to 4 1/2 feet high and 2 to 3 feet wide. It makes a fine foundation or hedge subject, and is a standout in the border. Best in full sun in all but the hottest regions, it tolerates a wide range of soil types, including heavy and poor soils. It is very low maintenance once established, and a year-round delight for the landscape. Zones 5-8.
