Prairie Mallow Partygirl
Butterflies and hummingbirds flock to these blooms!
Best in areas where summers are cool, Partygirl offers lobed foliage held well below the bloomspikes, as well as a groundhugging rosette of rounded leaves. This plant reaches just 12 to 18 inches wide and, in bloom, 24 to 48 inches high. (The bloom spires can reach 3 feet long!) Spectacular for cutflowers, it is also an impressive sight in the sunny border, with butterflies and hummingbirds flocking to the bobbing towers of rosy pink.
To flower its best, Partygirl should be deadheaded promptly each time it blooms. It tolerates light shade, but appreciates protection from wind. When temperatures climb too high, the flowering may be interrupted, but Partygirl will return with undiminished beauty next season.
Native to the northwestern United States, Sidalcea is a magnificent wildflower, and Partygirl improves on the species with a more restrained habit and stronger-colored flowers. Use it in the border, meadow, or cottage garden.
Best planted in groups of 3 or more, Partygirl is a splendid addition to the garden. Do find room for it this season! Zones 5-7.
