Silky Black Blooms

This aptly named Calla Lily is pure, black elegance.
'Queen of the Night' has one of the truest black blooms in the world, with shades the color of ripe eggplant, dark chocolate, or rich burgundy. These intensely dark purple blooms are perfectly shaped, with very tightly-wrapped petals forming a tall, elegant vase. The velvety black blooms are set against ruffled leaves with white speckling and a black reverse. The overall effect is very dramatic, making 'Queen of the Night' a perfect focal point in the vase, bouquet, or flower bed.

The flowers arise in early summer outdoors, though the bloomtime varies greatly when this bulb is grown as a houseplant. The stems are long, thick, and very strong, extending the life of the gorgeous blooms. Cut all you like for the vase; they are long-lasting and durable after cutting!

'Queen of the Night' reaches 18 to 24 inches high, with long, elegant, arching sword-shaped foliage of dark green spotted in white and edged in black. The leaves make nice filler for your bouquets, and add interesting texture and flecked color to the sunny or partly-shaded border.

Native to Africa, this Zantedeschia is a moist soil lover, and doesn't mind damp or even wet conditions. It's a good choice for boggy settings and waterside plantings. Indoors, make sure it stays consistently moist. Lovely! Zones 9 to 11.

Note: Like other Callas, 'Queen of the Night' is toxic if ingested. This is why deer avoid it, but you should also keep your pets out of it--one trick is to spray the leaves with water and then sprinkle them with cayenne pepper.
