Red Gem™ Goumi Shrub
Fragrant Flowers, Silvery Foliage, and Plump Habit!
Treasured in China for its medicinal properties (it is an antioxidant, high in lycopene, flavinoids, and vitamins A, C, and E), this shrub would be garden-worthy if it never set a single fruit. In mid- to late spring, ultra-fragrant white blooms dot its branches, the scent reminiscent of lilac. The olive-green foliage sports a silvery tint, especially in spring. In midsummer, the berries arrive, each about ½-inch long and packed with juicy tart-sweet flavor. Expect a mature Goumi to set 10 pounds or more every season!
Red Gem™ is deciduous, so in autumn the foliage begins to fall, revealing a bare silhouette for winter. Expect this well-branched, dense shrub to reach 6 feet high in large containers and up to 10 feet high in the garden. It thrives in full sun in cool, short-summer climates, partial shade farther south and west. And it tolerates urban pollution beautifully, as well as drought and salt spray. Perfect for a street planting, a foundation standout, or a carefree hedge at a beach house!
Although Red Gem™ is somewhat self-fertile, it will fruit far, far better if cross-pollinated with Sweet Scarlet, a more compact (and equally heavy-fruiting) variety. Both shrubs will begin to set fruit in the second year, and will have their first full season in their third year. You're going to love this nutritious, delectable fruit either raw or in preserves! Zones 4-7.
