More sun tolerant than others, it's a fine choice for areas where other Kalmias burn.

Very compact at just 3 to 4 feet high and wide, it's a lovely foreground planting to taller varieties.

'Sarah' is a spectacular selection, with exquisite clusters of summer blooms, brilliant red in bud and maturing to pinkish-red with distinct markings. New stems and leaves of bright maroon add to its ornamental value.

Mountain Laurel is considered by many to be the most beautiful flowering native shrub of eastern North America. 'Sarah,' bred by the great Dr. Jaynes and named for his wife, is one of the very best, preferring more sun than most Kalmia and growing to a dense, very compact form just 3 to 4 feet high and wide. The foliage is lush and healthy, keeping the shrub attractive both before and after its late-spring to early-summer blooms.

Give this shrub good soil drainage and full sun to partial shade. It appreciates cool, moist, well-drained, aerated, acidic soil, but is quite tolerant of less-than-ideal conditions. Plant with the root ball high or almost above ground level, hilling up the base with a heavy mulch. Zones 4-8.
