Spiraea Snow Storm™
In autumn, the foliage turns all shades of orange, red, and gold.
Snow Storm™ is a stunning new Spiraea, covering itself from tip to base in giant domed flowerheads that begin early and continue over a long season. The autumn foliage changes are spectacular as well, and the habit of this shrub is just the right size and shape for use in the foundation, as a low hedge, or in the border. We highly recommend it as an ultra-dependable, lovely all-purpose flowering shrub.
The large, deep green foliage emerges in early spring, followed by the first blooms in early summer. A week or two earlier than older varieties, Snow Storm's™ blooms are also far better distributed across the plant, covering it in giant dome-shaped flowerheads 6 to 8 inches wide. While most Spiraeas have a much looser look, these flowers form neat nosegays, far more symmetrical and formal than others. Very striking -- just ask the butterflies, who flock to this shrub as if nectar were going out of style.
The flowers continue through midsummer, and then after a few weeks' rest, the leaves begin to turn colors. Snow Storm™ offers really stunning fall foliage -- orange-red and gold are the dominant colors, in all shades of fiery brightness. A hedge or mass planting of this shrub is simply ablaze with color, creating an unforgettable sight in the sunny to partly shaded garden.
Snow Storm™ comes to us from Europe, introduced by Darthuizer Nursery of Holland. It has proven an instant favorite across the pond, and is ready to make its entrance into American gardens this season! Be the first to delight in this super-easy, widely-adapted shrub.
A few notes about care, since this shrub is so low maintenance you may simply forget about it in your garden chores: Snow Storm™ flowers only on new wood, so do prune it each year. Deadheading the blooms results in new buds arising much more quickly. --That's about it; the rest is simple enjoyment! Zones 4-8.
