Squash Park's Straightneck
More open habit means easier picking!
Everything is just a little better about this plant. It takes off quickly, begins blooming ahead of most others, and sets more fruit than you'd expect. Quickly ripening to 8 to 9 inches long, these slender, heavy squashes have very thin skins for a more tender, succulent bite. They're packed with creamy flesh, and even the skin is a bit lighter than the golden-yellow varieties of the past. They tend to be very uniform -- all about the same size -- which is a big advantage if you're cooking or canning them.
And Park's Straightneck is easier to harvest, thanks to the more open habit of the plant. You don't have to turn yourself into a pretzel to get at these fruits! And since there are many more of them, you get the same yield from fewer plants. We highly recommend this newcomer -- so highly that we've put our name on it!
Squash is a very easy crop, growing quickly from being direct-sown into the warm spring soil. It is often grown in hills, meaning that several seeds are sown together, so that the plants can vine out in all directions. A native vegetable, squash is one of the Three Sisters, the traditional Indian combination planting of beans, corn, and squash to make a complete protein. In the Three Sisters planting, each vegetable helps the others -- the beans grow up the corn while the squash keeps weeds at bay on the garden floor! Consider a Three Sisters planting with this straightneck, plus new hard-shelled bean Borlotto Solista and Corn Mirai. Easy and fun! Pkt is 20 seeds.
