A stunning native Azalea that will become the focal point of any garden setting into which it is placed, 'Tangerine Delight' combines the best characteristics of the native Flame Azalea (R. calendulaceum) with those of the famous Knaphill Azaleas. The result is brilliantly colored, fragrant flowers in huge numbers on a large, vigorous, adaptable shrub.

'Tangerine Delight' blooms in mid-spring in great clusters, the petals sporting bright shades of orange with peach and melon overtones. The fragrance is sweet, spicy, and very intense, filling the spring garden. And this shrub is no shrinking violet: it grows quickly to 10 feet high and 6 to 8 feet wide in dappled sun to partial shade.

This is, quite simply, one of the easiest Rhododendrons to grow, and therefore makes a fine choice for new gardeners or those contemplating a busy planting and maintenance schedule. A very quick grower, it flowers from a young age and branches out densely, with healthy dark green foliage that drops in late fall and then re-emerges, often with burgundy tints, before the flowers open in spring.

'Tangerine Delight' comes by its good looks and great performance honestly. It is a hybrid of several native species, most notably the Flame Azalea, the stunning R. calendulaceum native to the Appalachian region. From this species comes its tremendous size, its tolerance of dry soils and heat, and its generous and dense branching. From the Knaphill hybrids it gets its large, bright, and very profuse flower clusters and its wonderful fragrance!

Many gardeners consider 'Tangerine Delight' the best orange-flowered selection, and we might have to agree. When the sunlight catches these petals and they become translucent, they are a sight to see. The fragrance, particularly first thing in the morning, is delightful. And the big, flower-filled habit is a wonder in the back of the border, as a hedge, or along the perimeter of the property. Rely on this adaptable, very easy, beautiful spring bloomer for years of unparalleled color and fragrance. Make 'Tangerine Delight' a landmark in your garden. Zones 5-9.
