Just 4 to 6 inches high (when not in bloom) and wide, this Horned Violet (also called a Tufted Pansy, or, in a pinch, Johnny Jump-Up!) is built for action. In technical terms, it's less day-length sensitive than other Violas, which means it will grow and bloom equally well in the short fall days of the north and the longer days of the south. In practical terms, this means it will keep on going long after other Violas have chalked up their earnings for the season and vanished. And it's also simply more garden-tough, ready to grow and bloom even under less-than-ideal conditions. It blooms all winter in the south, and in both fall and spring farther north. These blooms are breathtaking, and there is also a yellow and a red gold in the series that will knock you sideways. Just about an inch wide, these blooms pack a ton of impact into a tiny space . . . and when the plant is in full bloom, they are magnificent.
