Western Sword Fern

Western Sword Fern

A Carefree Native Fern!

Western Sword Fern is one of the best native hardy ferns for American gardens. Evergreen, very adaptable, naturally symmetrical, and super low maintenance, it adds effortless color and texture to the shade, season after season!

This perennial arises naturally in the western part of North America, preferring shady spots in loamy to clay soil. Deer and other nibbling animals leave it alone, and it puts up with stresses from dry periods to heat and cold. It's even frost-tolerant!

Reaching 3½ feet high and wide (larger in some climates), it adds a great textural presence to the middle or back of any border, its long, arching fronds remaining fresh and attractive year round. The foliage is thick and leathery, very weather-tough and durable, season after season. If only all our perennials could boast such staying power!

Needing almost no attention from you once it makes itself at home, Western Sword Fern is a fine specimen planting, accent grouping, or mass planting in full to part shade. If you want more plants, simply divide it in early spring. Or let it remain in splendor, increasing in size and beauty each year! Highly recommended. Zones 5-9.
