Wojnar's Purple Rhododendron
Forms a rounded shrub with dense evergreen foliage.
But of course, it's the mid- to late spring blooms that are the main feature! The blossoms are wide-flaring, wavy-edged, and funnel-shaped, with a red-purple center and a dark purple-black-blotched upper lobe. They appear in large clusters, creating an explosion of brilliant color!
'Wojnar's Purple' has exhibited exceptional hardiness as well as beauty. It performs best in evenly moist, well-drained, richly organic, acidic soils in bright shade. It will tolerate sun with some protection from summer heat. Regular watering is required, and mulch is recommended to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool. If pruning is necessary, do so just after the flowers fade but before the next year's buds form. Zones 5-9.
