Blooms in early- and midsummer.

Bright 2- to 3-foot spikes of color!
Many Foxgloves are short-lived biennials, but this is the true perennial species. Like its cousins, it boasts plenty of colorful blooms up and down strong spikes in summer; unlike biennial varieties, however, it will return for many years to come to grace the sunny garden (in Northern climates) or brighten partly-shaded locations (in the South). In early- to midsummer, very abundant buds arise on the upper three-fourths of these 2- to 3-foot spikes, opening to lovely moonlight-yellow blooms, the inside cheerfully spotted with persimmon-red. Because the lower buds open earlier than the upper, each stalk remains colorful for several weeks!

Easily grown from seed in rich, moist soil, Digitalis is not too fussy about conditions. D. grandiflora is somewhat smaller and more delicate-looking (though actually much hardier) than the commonly-offered D. purpurea. Space about 12 to 15 inches apart in the border, bed, or wildflower meadow. Zones 3-8. Pkt is 100 seeds.
