Many Foxgloves are short-lived biennials, but this is the true, long-lived perennial species. Like its cousins, it boasts plenty of colorful blooms up and down strong spikes in summer; unlike its cousins, however, it will return for many years to come to grace the sunny garden (in Northern climates) or brighten partly-shaded locations (in the South). In early- to midsummer, very abundant buds open on the upper three-fourths of these 2- to 3-foot spikes, opening to lovely moonlight-yellow blooms, the inside cheerfully spotted with persimmon-red. Because the lower buds open earlier than the uppermost, each stalk remains colorful for several weeks!
Easy to grow in rich, moist soil, Digitalis is not too fussy about conditions. It is at home in the perennial border, bed, or wildflower meadow. Zones 3-8.
