Zinnia 'Red Spider'
Neat and compact, these plants grow like crazy from direct-sowing!
'Red Spider's blooms are about 1 1/4-inch wide, but have the impact of much larger flowers because of their crazy shape. The central cone is flat, dark brown to black, and surrounded by dozens of thin, flat, widely-spaced petals that curve up and over the top of the bloom, waving around in all directions like a spider's legs! Wow! And they arise very, very profusely on this vigorous little plant, beginning when the summer weather arrives and not leaving until the first hard chill of fall!
One reason this Zinnia looks so different is that it's an unusual species, Z. tenuifolia. The plants are upright, very compact, and well-branched, with plenty of blooms on short stems. Great in the landscape, it reaches just 18 to 24 inches tall and about a foot wide, keeping its tidy shape all season! Like other Zinnias, it's best directly sown into the warm spring soil, grows like crazy in any sun-drenched spot, and requires little attention from you . . . beyond "oohs" and "aahs," of course! Pkt is 50 seeds.
