Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merit

An all-around superior performer, Algarve, also known as Italian Romano Pole bean, sets plentiful pea-shaped white flowers in spring, followed by masses of very uniform, straight, thin, mid-green pods that reach up to 11 inches long and 1 inch wide. They have a tender bite with phenomenal, award-winning flavor. Completely stringless, the attractive pods look as good as they taste.

Typically grown as an annual, this herbaceous short-lived perennial (Zones 7-11) has a short growing season and performs in many different climates. Algarve is a vigorous, robust indeterminate variety, growing vertically as a graceful flowering vine that requires support, such as our bean growing tower or natural bamboo ring set., creating height and dimension in the garden. The vine may also be allowed to trail along the ground. Although the plant maintains a small footprint, it produces high yields for about a month. The beans are easy to harvest and earlier than most. Promptly picking the beans before the seeds mature keeps the beans coming.

A shallow-rooted plant, Algarve grows best in a sunny location with moist, fertile, organically rich, well-drained loams. It is resistant to common bean mosaic virus. Self-pollinating, it will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties.

A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, it is best direct-sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed. Succession plant every two weeks until about mid-August to ensure a continual harvest.

Algarve Italian Romano Pole bean seeds can also be started indoors and planted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

Awesome Beans

This shopper rated the product 5 out of 5 stars

Wow, are these beans good! I ordered them last year just because the variety I wanted wasn't available. Happy accident, because they produced like crazy and were absolutely delectable! My twelve-year-old son inhaled them for weeks on end. Plus they took a long time to get seedy, when meant when I was a little late going out to pick them, they were still in very good shape. They grew enormously long and I put them in a lot of recipes! BTW, I almost never write reviews as I am pretty busy, but this one was worth the time!

delicious

These beans were excellent and a good producer. It took a while for them to start blooming in the Pacific Northwest, but once they started to produce beans, the plants did so until after the first frost. Excellent flavor as well.

Best Bean Ever!

This shopper rated the product 5 out of 5 stars

I have grown Algarve every year since finding it at Park Seed about 8 years ago. I try a different variety along with Algarve each year, but none has equalled in taste, earliness, yield, and over-all quality. The larger ones, I slice, or French, and stay completely stringless. They yield until frost, if kept picked, through the season. My all time favorite green bean!

Pick them early for best flavor

This shopper rated the product 5 out of 5 stars

These are awesome beans. Quick to produce vs. other string beans. They taste best if picked when they are 1/2" to 3/4" wide and 8" to 10" long. The 1"x 12" and larger beans are not as tasty. Search for Green Beans Gremolata recipes. Best if blanched 4 minutes in salted water before frying. This is the second year I have grown these beans. I will plant them again next year.

What a surprise!

This shopper rated the product 5 out of 5 stars

Ordered and planted these on a whim in 2015. A 12ft row supplied me and two neighbors with beans all summer. I also froze 5 gallons for winter eating. They were the best tasting I have eaten in ages and 100% stringless. Just wonderful. Tried to grow them last year but weather didn't cooperate. Almost all of my summer garden failed because of cold wet weather. This year they are on my list of must haves (weather permitting).
