Description

Cold Hardy to Zone 4

A Proven Winners® variety, Berberis Sunjoy Orange Pillar™ is a deciduous flowering shrub offering 3 seasons of interest, grown for its slender branches bearing vivid neon orange-red leaves with chartreuse margins. Although the shrub blooms in spring, the flowers are insignificant. Berberis Sunjoy Orange Pillar carries its beautiful color into fall along with bright red berries, which persist into winter and attract birds.

A Berberis thunbergii, commonly called barberry, Sunjoy Orange Pillar has a versatile upright, columnar, spreading habit. The plant grows well in urban conditions, including around parking lots and in street plantings. It's a great "thriller" for a container garden but shows to best effect when massed or grouped in landscapes and borders. It is a good option for xeriscapes.

Cold hardy and easy to grow, Berberis Sunjoy Orange Pillar prefers full sun and average, dry to medium moisture, well-draining soils. It adapts to a wide range of soils but does not tolerate poorly drained, wet soils. It is heat and drought tolerant and deer resistant. Trim as needed in late spring/early summer; however, hard pruning is not recommended and cutting into thick wood should be avoided unless entire branches are removed. Fun fact: barberry stems are yellow inside.
