Description

Giant beefsteaks in sunshine shades

Days to Maturity: 71 from transplant

Determinate

Don't let the "Carolina" part of this tomato's name fool you: it may have been developed in the south, but this is a beefsteak for all climates. Widely adapted, very disease resistant, and heavy bearing, Carolina Gold is the ideal home garden subject for big, sweet, mild tomatoes.

The fruit ranges from extra-large to large in size, and turns a rich shade of glossy gold when fully ripe. Unlike many other varieties, Carolina Gold is not trouble by gray wall, so the ripening is uniform and attractive. And these tough plants stand up to verticillium and fusarium wilt, too, making them a good choice for the new gardener to grow.

Carolina Gold is determinate, setting its generous crop all within a few weeks. This is perfect for the gardener who wants to can, sauce, dry, freeze, or juice the crop. Low in acids and high in rich, mild flavor, this is a great tomato for eating fresh from the garden, too.

Start the seeds indoors 5 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Plant outdoors when danger of frost is past and night temperatures consistently remain above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. If an unexpected late frost is forecasted, protect young plants with plastic sheeting or other cover. Set plants 2 to 2½ feet apart
