'Circus Clowns' Snapdragon mix contains short-lived tender perennials (Zones 7-10), usually grown as half-hardy annuals, offering summer interest. Providing a full festival of flowers, the long-blooming plants set bright bicolor blooms for months. Borne on medium tall flower spikes, the vibrant two-lipped "dragon head" flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds and make excellent cut flowers.
'Circus Clowns' Snapdragons, Antirrhinum majus cultivars, have an upright, bushy, well-branched habit of lance-shaped, glossy dark green leaves. Snapdragons are old garden favorites, shown to best effect when grouped or massed in beds, borders, and patio pots.
Easy to grow from seed, snapdragons prefer full sun and moist, organically rich, well-drained soils. Although snapdragons are low maintenance plants, pinching off stem tips of young plants promotes bushiness, and deadheading frequently throughout summer keeps snapdragons blooming. Deer typically leave them alone.
Start snapdragon seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost date, gradually acclimatize outdoors over 7 to 10 days, and transplant seedlings in the garden after all risk of frost has passed.
If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
