A Proven Winners® variety, Diervilla Kodiak® Fresh™ is a flowering deciduous shrub offering 3 seasons of interest. Bright chartreuse foliage first emerges in orange and red hues. Tiny yellow flowers, borne in terminal clusters, appear all summer, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The vibrant leaves add vivid color and texture to the garden all season and are often used as foliage filler in floral arrangements. With its brilliant orange fall foliage, diervilla is an environmentally friendly alternative to burning bush (Euonymus alatus), which is invasive and being restricted throughout the U.S.
A Diervilla x splendens, commonly called bush honeysuckle (a misnomer) or diervilla (preferred), Kodiak Fresh has a tidy, upright, mounded habit and a fast growth rate but is not invasive. Shown to best effect when massed or grouped, the shrub is ideal for low-maintenance hedges, foundation plantings, and erosion control. It is a perfect addition to wildlife gardens and an excellent "thriller" in a container garden.
Cold hardy and easy to grow, Kodiak Fresh prefers full sun to part shade and moist, well-draining, humusy loams but tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay soils. It tolerates dry soil but loves wet feet. Diervilla is one of the most shade tolerant shrubs; however, the best color and blooming occur with plenty of sun, and in northern climates, it should be planted in full sun. It is deer resistant, drought tolerant, and generally unbothered by pests. The shrub benefits from pruning every 3 to 5 years, but it blooms on new wood, so any pruning should be done in spring.
