(Syn. 'Xerxes.')

Regaling the garden with large, brilliantly colored blooms twice a year, 'Elsa Spath' is a welcome addition to any sunny border or rose garden. This heirloom award-winner remains among the finest blue-flowered Clematis ever developed, as beloved for its vigor and heavy flower production as for the beauty of its blooms.

The first flush of bloom occurs in early and midsummer, with flowers reaching 6 to 7 inches wide. As they mature, the strong shade of blue passes into a mauve-purple with hints of pink. A central cluster of stamens punctuates the display, the white filaments topped with dark red anthers.

The second bloom appears in early fall in most climates, with the flowers somewhat smaller (perhaps 4 inches on average) but nearly as numerous. This late-flowering Clematis is a great boon to areas of the garden that reach their apex in summer, such as the rose display, extending the color into another season.

'Elsa Spath' is a German hybrid, introduced in 1891 by L. Spath and recipient of the Award of Garden Merit, the Royal Horticulture Society's top honor. Despite its great vigor, it remains a compact plant, reaching 6 to 7 feet high and quite as suitable for containers as for the garden. A versatile, always dependable, simply lovely Clematis, it deserves a place of honor in your garden. Zones 4-9. Pruning Group II.
