Hakonechloa Lemon Zest™ Hakone Grass is a deciduous perennial grass, grown for its distinctive foliage that adds bold color, dramatic texture, and delicate movement to the garden. Lemon Zest is considered one of the lightest and brightest of the ornamental grasses, enlivening dark, shady spaces with its brilliant chartreuse color and lemony yellow and ivory white variegation. The plant's slender, linear, gracefully arching leaves gently stir and whisper in the breeze. Softly cascading, they give the plant an elegant waterfall appearance.
A Hakonechloa macra, commonly called Hakone grass or Japanese forest grass, Lemon Zest has a slow growth rate and a loose, mounding habit. The rhizomatous plant spreads but is never invasive. Shown to best effect when mass planted, this Hakone grass is perfect for under planting as ground cover. But it's also a great bed, border, or container plant.
Low maintenance, Lemon Zest Hakone Grass grows best in shady to partly shady locations with humus-rich, consistently moist, well-draining soil. Best color is in dappled shade. Do not prune.
