Days to Maturity: 90 from sowing seed indoors
All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 2013
It's going to be a season to remember for watermelon lovers across the country. Harvest Moon hybrid, the first seedless to ever take All-America Selection honors, is now available for home gardeners. We're proud to say that you're absolutely going to love this sweet, crisp, beautiful melon.
Harvest Moon is a modern take on the beloved heirloom variety Moon & Stars, with freckles and blotches of yellow on a dark green rind. These melons are a bit smaller at 18 to 20 pounds (about 13 to 15 inches long), and the fruit is a pinkish-tinged red, crisp and juicy. But the biggest difference? Only a couple of seeds in the entire melon.
For the home gardener, one of the biggest advantages of Harvest Moon is that the fruit is set on shorter vines. Watermelons can gobble up a lot of garden space, so you'll really appreciate the more compact habit of this vigorous, healthy grower. Plan about 3 to 5 feet per plant, with a yield of 4 to 5 melons. That's about as compact as this giant fruit can get. Of course, you can plant Harvest Moon among all your other melonsit comes with pollinator seed, so plant the whole packet of seeds in the same general area, and mix in any other melons you may like. Harvest Moon will stay seedless.
Seedless, or triploid, watermelons can be a bit more finicky to germinate than their seeded cousins, so we recommend starting the seed indoors at 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the seedlings have two sets of true leaves and the soil is warm outdoors, transplant them into the garden.
You are going to love the improved flavor, more compact size, and terrific yields of Harvest Moon. Enjoy the convenience of seedless watermelon in a delicious new package.
