Most Zinnias are considered either landscaping types (such as Profusion) or cutting varieties (such as Park's Picks). But Hidden Dragon (and its partner, Crouching Dragon!) is more versatile: it looks terrific in the garden and keeps its healthy foliage right up to frost, yet is also ideal for the vase. Best of all, the flowers gradually acquire their double set of petals, so they spot several different looks as they mature. At any given moment, the newly-opened blooms will be single daisies, while others have an elegant ruff around their central cone, and the most "mature" will be full, petal-packed pompons!
These 3-inch blooms are gorgeous and long-lasting. Hidden Dragon sports deep red petals tipped in white, so the new blooms are nicely bicolored, while the fully double mature blooms have only peekaboo streaks of red visible among the froth of white tips! You'll love how the look and color pattern changes with each day of bloom -- and you can cut the flowers at any stage to preserve your favorite "look" for the vase!
Hidden Dragon is completely uniform in size and bloomtime. These plants reach about 2 feet high in full bloom, and spread a foot or so wide. They begin blooming just 9 to 12 weeks after sowing, and continue as long as the hot weather and regular watering keep coming. So easy, and such a long season of glory!
This beautiful Zinnia has been awarded a 2015 Fleuroselect Novelty Award, Europe's highest honor for flowers from seed. The judges felt that its earlier bloomtime, versatile landscape/cutting habit, and big lovely double blooms were absolutely unsurpassed, and we have to agree. For a big show, rely onHidden Dragon, with or without its Crouching Tiger!
Zinnias are among the easiest of all plants to grow from seed. Wait until the soil is warm to direct-sow the seeds into a sunny, well-drained garden spot or your best containers -- or, for an even quicker display, begin the seeds in the Bio Dome or seed flats in late winter, transplanting as soon as the seedlings have 2 sets of true leaves and the weather has warmed outdoors. Keep the plants watered, and make sure they get lots of sun. That's really all there is to it!
These are festive and vigorous plants for use in borders, bedding, edging, containers, and as a fresh cut flower. They will be covered in flowers from summer to frost. Zinnia elegans, Common Zinnia, grows 6-40 inches tall and has broad ovate, 1-4 inch long by 1-2 inch wide leaves. The 1-7 inch diameter flowers come in colors of pink, rose, cherry, lavender, purple, red, orange, salmon, gold, yellow, cream, or light green. Color patterns are solid, zoned, or multi-colored, petal arrangement is either single or double, and flower heads are often chrysanthemum-, dahlia-, or cactus-like. Zinnia haageana, Mexican Zinnia, grows 12-18 inches tall and has narrow 1-2 inch long by 1/2 inch wide leaves. The 1-21/2 inch flowers are red, mahogany, yellow, or orange. Color patterns are solid or two-toned and petal arrangement is either single or double. Zinnia angustifolia (Z. linearis), Narrow-leaf Zinnia, grows 12 inches tall and has narrow, 1-2 inch long by 1/2 inch wide leaves. The 1 inch diameter flowers are golden-orange with yellow stripes and are single in petal arrangement

The Park Seed Gold Standard
Heirloom Seeds are open-pollinated -- they are not hybrids. You can gather and save heirloom seed from year to year and they will grow true to type every year, so they can be passed down through generations. To be considered an heirloom, a variety would have to be at least from the 1940's and 3 generations old (many varieties are much older -- some 100 years or more!).
Hybrid seed are the product of cross-pollination between 2 different parent plants, resulting in a new plant/seed that is different from the parents. Unlike Heirloom seed, hybrid seed need to be re-purchased new every year (and not saved). They usually will not grow true to type if you save them, but will revert to one of the parents they were crossed with and most likely look/taste different in some way.
