All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 2014

Bush Bean

The first bean to win an All-America Selections since 1991, Mascotte arrives in style. This petite French filet bean is just right for containers as well as the garden, a bush-type haricot vert with dense but shallow roots and stringless beans that sit right on the top of the foliage, for easy picking. It's your patio vegetable extraordinaire for the season.

But Mascotte is much more than just a pretty face. This bean is prepared to set a good generous crop of 5- to 6-inch pods, just ¼-inch in diameter but packed with rich, succulent flavor and crunchy texture. They're made to be julienned, but also taste delicious straight from the garden, pod and all.

Mascotte reaches just 16 to 18 inches high and about 8 to 10 inches wide, so it's incredibly compact. If you're growing it in the garden, sow the seeds 2 to 3 inches apart in rows about a foot apart. If it's going in a window box, space holes about a foot apart and fill each hole with 3 to 4 seeds. And if you're planting it in a round flowerpot or similar container, space holes 4 inches apart and put 5 seeds in each hole.

Resistant to bean common mosaic virus, anthracnose, and halo blight, this dwarf bean is a treasure for any setting. White blooms arise in spring, beginning its season of glory. They are quickly followed by the young pods, which lie right on top of the foliage, as if inviting you to pick them. Nothing could be simpler or more attractive. Grow Mascotte as both a working veggie and an ornamental among the nasturtiums and spreading petunias this season. You'll love how it improves the garden and beautifies the patio or deck.

Wonderful Beans! 0 people found this helpful

I have never had success growing green beans in bulk until I tried these! They take up less space in my raised beds than other beans and taste amazing! We had green beans every week at least once with dinner. Will be buying again this season!

Very productive. Produce multitudes of slender, tender beans 0 people found this helpful

I grow almost all of our veggies in our basement under LED lighting for a number of years. This was the first time I tried bush beans indoors, and this was one of the 4 beans I grew. This time, I grew them in large bussing tubs and planted 8 plants per tub. These plants did not grow as large as described, but they did produce quite a few slender, 4-5 inch beans. The plants were covered with flowers and produced as many beans. I steamed them for freezing, and after microwaving the frozen beans, they were tender and very flavorful. This has become one our favorites. I will definitely be growing them again, but will allow them more space in pots. Hopefully, the plants will grow larger and produce more with less plants.

I bought 3 packs of the Mascotte beans and 3 packs of Maxabell beans. This is the first time I have not had luck with ParkSeed seeds. I gave one of each to a friend. Out of the other 400 or so seeds, I got maybe 16-20 plants. I'm so disappointed! Not sure if I will spend the money to try next year.

Very productive small plants 0 people found this helpful

I have grown most of our veggies indoors and decided to try this variety of green beans. I planted 8 plants each in two bussing tubs. The plants stayed small, but produced so many beans. I harvested over 2 1/4 lbs. of beans in the first harvest. Most of the beans I harvested were about 4 inches in length and about 1/8" in diameter. I plan to steam, package, and vacuum seal them for freezing. I tasted one of the raw and it was tender and flavorful. So I know they will be wonderful steamed and buttered.

AMAZING 0 people found this helpful

I am extremely impressed with these seeds. This is my first time growing Mascotte, I've started 3 cycles two weeks apart each in window boxes on a tiered cart, and every single one has had a fast germination of 2-3 days and near 100%. They are flowering now and extremely productive, each plant is bursting with flowers. I can't believe how easily and quickly they've grown. This will for sure be an annual repeat for our family. Wonderful.

Amazinglly prolific! 0 people found this helpful
I have never grown beans that were so prolific! I planted them inside on April 15, transplanted them out on May 1, and they produced beautifully and continuously from the middle of July until now, the end of August. At this time, they still have flowers, but are looking about ready for the compost pile. I shall plant a few more for a late fall harvest.

Not sure what I haave but they're NOT Mascotte 0 people found this helpful

I planted Mascotte last year and LOVED them. Typical hericorts verts, green, slim, tender; wonderful for a salad Nisoise or just plain steamed with a bit of butter. Of course I ordered them from you and planted them again this year. What I have this year are big, flat pods of a blue-gray color. They look tough and unappetizing, even hanging from the plant. And the taste and texture are not even close to what I had last year Not sure what happened here, but I'm awfully disappointed!

Love these beans...just reordered 3 packs. So far these are the only thing I’ve had success with since moving here from PA. As long as you keep on top of the bugs with Neem oil you’ll be fine. I’ve had no success with zucchini & tomatoes here

What's not to love. Beautiful, productive plants fill my sub irrigated planter with the most delectable, gourmet treats. Love to steam them with baby potatoes and serve with a pat of butter. YUMMMMM!
